Remotion vs Creatomate
Remotion renders React code to video on your own servers; Creatomate renders JSON templates in its cloud via API, spreadsheets or no-code tools. Compared.
Short answer: use Remotion if you want the video to be React code in your repo, rendered on infrastructure you control. Use Creatomate if you want a visual template editor and a hosted renderer you can drive from an API, a spreadsheet, a form or a no-code tool. Remotion is a framework for building videos; Creatomate is a platform for filling templates at scale.

How Remotion works
Remotion gives you a frame number and a blank canvas, and you render anything React can draw for that frame. A composition is a component plus a size, fps and duration. Templates are just components with props, so one composition renders a different video for every set of props you pass.
Rendering runs on your side. @remotion/renderer captures frames with
Puppeteer and encodes them with FFmpeg, which ships inside the package since
v4. You can render from the CLI, Node, GitHub Actions, or in the cloud with
Remotion Lambda, which renders chunks of one video in parallel and stitches
them together. See how to make videos with React
for a minimal composition.
How Creatomate works
Creatomate's own description: design a video or image template in a visual editor, then generate media at scale through the API, Zapier, Make, n8n, spreadsheet feeds or shareable forms. Every video and image is described by a JSON format called RenderScript; a template is stored RenderScript with an ID. New templates start from built-in kits.
Rendering a template from code is one request:
curl -X POST https://api.creatomate.com/v2/renders \
-H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"template_id": "YOUR_TEMPLATE_ID",
"modifications": { "Title-1": "Your headline here" }
}'It returns 202 with a render object; you poll GET /v2/renders/:id until
the status is succeeded or failed, or pass a webhook_url. A dry_run
flag validates the request and returns the effective RenderScript without
spending credits. Output files stay hosted for up to 30 days and are then
deleted, so Creatomate recommends copying them to your own storage as soon as
a render completes.
For non-developers, feeds are spreadsheets where each row renders a video, and shareable forms let someone fill in fields and render. The JS Preview SDK embeds Creatomate's renderer in your own web app so users can preview or edit before rendering.
The difference that decides it
In Remotion you write the pixels. Each frame is a React render, so your real
components — inputs with a caret, charts, code blocks, your design system —
are what appears on screen, and motion is interpolate() and spring() on
the frame number. Anything a browser can draw is in scope, and the source of
truth is TypeScript in git.
In Creatomate you configure a template. Elements (media, text, subtitles, shapes, compositions) are placed and animated with presets and keyframes in the editor or in RenderScript, then filled with data. That is a faster path to a hundred social posts from a spreadsheet, and it lets a marketer change the template without a deploy. It is not your React codebase, so a UI shot means rebuilding the interface in the template or recording it first.
Pricing
Creatomate sells three self-serve plans — Essential ("best for individuals"), Growth ("startups and small teams") and Beyond ("scale-ups") — billed monthly or annually, with annual billing advertised as two months free. The dollar prices on the pricing page are rendered by JavaScript and were not readable when checked, so see creatomate.com/pricing for current numbers. What the page does state:
| Plan | Credits a month | Storage | Feed rows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | 2,000 | 5 GB | 1,000 |
| Growth | 10,000 to 40,000 | 50 GB | 10,000 |
| Beyond | 50,000 to 200,000 | 500 GB | 100,000 |
All plans include no-code and API access. The JS Preview SDK starts on Growth. The free trial is 50 credits with no credit card, and Creatomate's docs say the free plan clamps output to 480 px on both sides.
Credits work like this, per Creatomate's docs: an image is one credit at any resolution, and a video costs width × height × frame rate × seconds ÷ 100,000,000, rounded up. Their examples: 1280×720 at 25 fps is about 13.8 credits a minute, and 1080×1920 at 30 fps about 37.3. Higher resolution and frame rate cost proportionally more.
Remotion is free for individuals, for-profit organisations with up to three employees, and non-profits, including commercial use. Above that, a Company License on remotion.pro costs $0.01 per render with a $100 a month minimum for automated rendering, or $25 a month per seat for manual creation, with Enterprise from $500 a month. Compute is separate: you pay your own server, Lambda or other host.

When Remotion wins
- The video is made of interface. Product demos, changelogs and launch videos are your UI, which is already React and CSS.
- Developers own it. Code review, CI renders, and coding agents such as Claude Code editing compositions directly. See Claude Code + Remotion.
- You want installable scenes. Libraries like snapcn
copy Remotion components into your project with
npx shadcn@latest add @snapcn/<name>— a screen recording or text reveal is an install, not a template build. - You control the cost curve. Free up to three employees, and render compute is whatever infrastructure you choose.
When Creatomate wins
- Non-developers run it. A marketer edits the template and fills a spreadsheet; no code, no deploy.
- The workflow is no-code. Zapier, Make and n8n integrations are built in.
- You render images and video from one template system. Social posts, banners and short clips share the same editor and API.
- You do not want to run a renderer. Rendering and temporary hosting are part of the service.
For a product video
Pick Remotion. A product video is mostly your interface, and Remotion draws it with the code you already have. Start with a product demo video in React. Related: Remotion vs Shotstack, Remotion vs Revideo and Remotion vs After Effects.

FAQ
What is the difference between Remotion and Creatomate?
Remotion is a React framework. A video is a component rendered frame by frame, and you render it yourself with the CLI, Node or AWS Lambda. Creatomate is a hosted media automation platform. You design a template in its visual editor, then render variations through its API, spreadsheet feeds, forms, or Zapier, Make and n8n.
How does Creatomate pricing work?
Creatomate sells monthly or annual plans (Essential, Growth and Beyond) that include a number of credits. An image costs one credit; a video costs credits based on width, height, frame rate and duration. There is a 50-credit free trial with no credit card. Check creatomate.com/pricing for current dollar prices.
Is Remotion free?
Remotion is free for individuals, for-profit companies with up to three employees and non-profits. Larger companies need a Company License, priced per render for automation or per seat for manual creation. Rendering compute is yours to run and pay for.
Which should I use for a product demo video?
Remotion, in most cases, because a product demo is UI and Remotion draws UI with React and CSS. Creatomate fits when marketers or no-code workflows need to fill a template with data, such as social posts or listing videos, without developers in the loop.
