Is Remotion free? The Remotion license explained

Who can use Remotion free, when a Company License is required, what a seat and a render cost, and how headcount, agencies and automations are counted.

Short answer: Remotion is free if you are an individual, a for-profit organisation of up to three people, a non-profit, or still evaluating it — even for commercial work. Organisations of four or more people need a Company License: $25/month per seat to make videos by hand (Remotion for Creators), or $0.01 per render with a $100/month minimum to run an automation (Remotion for Automators). Features are identical on every tier.

Everything below was checked on remotion.dev, remotion.pro and Remotion's GitHub repository in October 2026. Prices change; the License FAQ is the source of truth.

Who can use Remotion for free

The Remotion License lists four groups eligible for the Free License:

  • an individual
  • a for-profit organisation with up to 3 employees
  • a non-profit or not-for-profit organisation
  • someone evaluating whether Remotion is a good fit and not yet using it commercially

The FAQ is explicit about the edges. A single-person company can stay on the Free License "as long as your total headcount is 3 or less", even if incorporated. You can make money under it. You can run an automation under it. And you don't need to sign up anywhere — "simply get started".

The free licence also has no feature limits. The FAQ answers "Does the Free License have restrictions in functionality?" with a plain "No."

When you need a Company License

As soon as your organisation has four or more people. remotion.pro describes the Company License as "Required for collaborations and companies of 4+ people".

The part people get wrong is who counts. Remotion's Terms and Conditions define headcount as "all personnel, regardless of whether they use the Remotion Software." So the FAQ's own example — a 20-person company where only one person uses Remotion — needs a Company License. The good news in the same answer: on the Creators option, you only pay for one seat, for the person actually using it.

Creators or Automators?

The Company License has two options, and you pick by what you do with Remotion, not by how many people you are.

Remotion for Creators — $25/month per seat. For organisations that produce videos without setting up an automation. The FAQ says it costs "$25/month per person who writes Remotion code themselves or using agentic coding tools." remotion.pro describes it as "For low volume manual video creations, and building motion design systems in a local environment (including using AI agents and Remotion Studio)."

Remotion for Automators — $0.01 per render, $100/month minimum. For organisations building automations. Developers working on automations do not need a Creators seat. If you activate both options, a combined minimum of $100/month applies.

What counts as an automation

The FAQ defines an automation as "owning code that programmatically calls" one of a list of APIs and commands. The list includes renderMedia(), renderStill(), renderFrames(), the Lambda, Cloud Run and Vercel render functions, renderMediaOnWeb(), the npx remotion render and still CLI commands — and the <Player> component.

That last one surprises people. In the FAQ's words, "organizations building video editors, prompt-to-video tools, automated video pipelines or using the Remotion Player will fall under Remotion for Automators."

What counts as a render

"1 render is the successful generation of a video, audio, GIF, still image or image sequence." An image sequence counts as one render however many frames it has. Previews in Remotion Studio or the Remotion Player do not count.

Only Automators pay per render. Free License users and Creators-only customers never do.

Enterprise License

An Enterprise License costs the same as a Company License as a baseline, but with a $500/month minimum instead of $100 — remotion.pro lists it as "Starting at $500 per month". It adds things that are overhead for Remotion: custom terms and pricing, signed agreements, compliance and vendor forms, a private Slack, Discord or Teams channel, a monthly consulting session, and the Editor Starter included. Purchase orders and vendor onboarding require it.

Agencies, contractors and clients

The FAQ splits agency work into cases:

  • You deliver only a finished file (an MP4). The client never gets or runs the project, so only your agency's headcount counts. Three people or fewer, free; four or more, Company License.
  • The client owns or operates the Remotion project. Both companies' headcounts are added together for the 4-person threshold, and the licence is the responsibility of whoever ultimately owns the project's IP.
  • You bring in another agency or contractors on the same project. Their headcount aggregates with yours.

What you can and can't build

Any commercial use is allowed, with two limits that apply to everyone. You can't sell Remotion itself, or a derivative of it. And you can't run a service where users "bring/upload their own Remotion code" for rendering without Remotion's written approval.

What is allowed: a template users personalise and render, a drag-and-drop editor built on Remotion, and a service that generates Remotion code with an LLM and renders it — users may even edit that code, as long as your service generated it first.

Telemetry and how renders are counted

On the Automators plan it is your job to keep the licensed render count in step with real usage, adjusted in the remotion.pro dashboard. Client-side rendering has telemetry enabled by default that cannot be disabled. Server-side rendering has no automatic telemetry today, but the FAQ says Remotion 5.0 will make it mandatory for Automators customers. It stays voluntary for Free License users and Creators.

Changes coming in Remotion 5.0

The current LICENSE.md opens with a note that the licence "will slightly change" in Remotion 5.0, linking to pull request #3750, which is still open. It lists two effective changes: contractors also count towards team size, and the Company License becomes bound to Remotion's terms and conditions. The latest release when we checked was 4.0.537.

Is Remotion open source?

No — and Remotion says so itself. The FAQ: "Remotion is source-available software, but it is not open source software according to the Open Source Initiative's Open Source Definition." If you need an OSI licence, see Remotion alternatives; Revideo, Motion Canvas and Manim are MIT, HyperFrames is Apache 2.0.

What this means for third-party components

Libraries built on top of Remotion carry their own licence, but they don't replace Remotion's. snapcn's free components are MIT and copy into your project with npx shadcn@latest add @snapcn/<name> — you still need a Remotion licence if your organisation is four or more people. See the snapcn license page for what snapcn's own plans cover.

FAQ

Is Remotion free?

Yes for individuals, for-profit organisations of up to three people, non-profits, and anyone still evaluating it. Everyone else needs a paid Company License. There is no difference in features between the free and paid licences.

How much does a Remotion Company License cost?

Remotion for Creators is $25 per month per seat. Remotion for Automators is $0.01 per render with a $100 per month minimum. If you take both, a combined $100 per month minimum applies. The Enterprise License starts at $500 per month.

Does my whole company count, or only the people using Remotion?

The whole company. Remotion's terms count headcount as all personnel, whether or not they use Remotion. A 20-person company where one person uses Remotion needs a Company License, but on the Creators option it only needs one seat for that person.

Is Remotion open source?

No. Remotion's own FAQ calls it source-available. The code is public on GitHub, but its use is governed by the Remotion License, which is not an OSI-approved open source licence.
